As well as working in the salon, I teach two yoga classes per week. Yoga is about union. Connecting to your personal source of creativity through meditation, physical postures, breathing techniques or whatever your practice may be. It can be a subtle awareness or a powerful feeling of locking in to something amazing and it can happen in a moment. It can happen during a haircut!
In a recent class, as I was guiding a student through a series of postures, I was reminded of my own feeling of connection when working in the salon. I remembered one specific moment when I had sectioned off the nape (area just under the occipital bone at the back of the neck, for those non hairdressers reading this:) and was positioning myself to cut the first sub-section of a graduated bob. It occurred to me that as I positioned my fingers for the correct angle and tension and was approaching with my razor in the other hand, I was visualizing the shape I was going for. I had this feeling of being locked on to that visual like it was a target. I took a deep breath and felt this powerful connection to some kind of creative force surging through my hands. Not sure why I took notice other than the feeling was so strong and I trusted it so much. It was like magic. I paused for a moment, let go of my mind, and started cutting the hair. The whole experience was perfect, including the haircut, but in this instance, the beauty is in the noticing, the awareness. That is it. That is yoga.
